How we match casinos

The match score runs from 0 to 100 and says how alike two gambling sites are. It is built from six things we can see for ourselves, each with a fixed weight. It is not a rating of how good a site is.

Which sites are in the index

A brand is listed only when the Gambling Commission's public register places it on a live licence. Today that is 518 brands run by 123 licence holders. Brands without a current Great Britain licence are left out, however often people search for them.

319 of those brands have match data so far. For 90 we read it from our own screenshots of the homepage, games lobby and promotions page. For the other 229 we read it from the text of the brand's homepage. Each brand page says which, and when.

The six factors

FactorPointsHow it is scored
Game mix25The game types both sites show, divided by the game types either shows. The seven types are slots, bingo, Slingo, live casino, sports betting, poker, instant games.
Main product15Full points when both sites put the same thing first in their own menu. A bingo site and a sportsbook that both carry slots are not the same kind of site, and this factor keeps them apart.
Welcome offer type20The kinds of welcome both sites showed, out of: free spins, wager-free winnings, bingo bonus, deposit match, free bets, poker bonus, cashback. The size of an offer is not scored.
Welcome deposit15The smallest deposit that unlocked the welcome offer. The same amount scores full points, up to £5 apart scores half, up to £10 apart a quarter.
Same owner15Full points when both brands run on one Gambling Commission account, half when different licence holders share a parent group, none otherwise.
Extras10Features seen on the site: prize wheels, free daily games, tournaments, progressive jackpots, cashback, loyalty schemes and similar.

When we do not know something

If either site did not show a factor where we looked, that factor scores half its points. A missing fact neither helps nor hurts a match. The side-by-side table on each page prints "Not shown" in those cells, so you can see what the score rests on.

Nothing is filled in by guesswork. We do not record payment methods unless the site listed them on the pages we captured, which is why payments are not a scoring factor yet.

What "different owner" means

Every brand page has two lists. The first ranks all matches. The second leaves out the brand's own group, so you can find the same kind of site run by another company. Owner details come from the register, and each page links to the account it relies on.

Dates and changes

Casino sites change their offers often. Every profile carries the month we checked it, and welcome offers are quoted with that month. A page's "checked" date moves only when its content changes.

What the score does not tell you

  • Whether a site pays out quickly, treats complaints well or suits you. That is what a review is for.
  • Whether an offer is good value. We report the type and the deposit, not a verdict.
  • Anything about sites with no Great Britain licence. They are not in the index.
